The history of Mother’s Day

Celebrating one’s mother can be traced back to the time of ancient Greeks and Romans in which they had festivals honoring the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. However, the first modern interpretation of the holiday is related to the early Christian festival called “Mothering Sunday” and was prevalent in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe. This is when those who practiced would return to their “mother church”, or the main church in their town, for a special service during the fourth Sunday in Lent. Eventually, the Mothering Sunday tradition became a more secular holiday in which children would give their mothers presents such as flowers and other gifts to show their love and appreciation for them. This eventually became the Mother’s Day holiday we know today in America starting in the 1930s and 1940s.

In the United States, the origins of Mother’s Day have a long history of their own, which date back to the 19th century. Before the Civil War, Ann Reeves Jarvis started “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” in West Virginia which aimed to teach local women how to properly care for their children. Eventually after the Civil War in 1868, Jarvis organized “Mothers’ Friendship Day” where mothers gathered with former Union and Confederate soldiers to promote peace. Julia Ward Howe, who was an abolitionist and suffragette, was another “founder” of the holiday we know today. In 1870, she wrote the “Mother’s Day Proclamation” which was a call to action that asked mothers to unite in promoting world peace. In 1873, she also campaigned for a “Mother’s Peace Day” to be celebrated every June 2.

The official holiday of Mother’s Day arose in the 1900s mainly due to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, the daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis. To commemorate her mother’s passing in 1905, her daughter created a day to honor the sacrifices that mothers made for their children. After receiving much success from the holiday, Jarvis sought to make it added to the national calendar. She argued that American holidays were biased toward the success of men, so she wrote to newspapers and established politicians where she strongly urged them to adopt a special day honoring mothers. In 1912, many states, towns and churches recognized Mother’s Day as an official and annual holiday; she had also established the Mother’s Day International Association to help promote her cause. In 1914, thanks to all of Anna Jarvis’s efforts, Woodrow Wilson officially recognized and established the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated worldwide, but varies depending on the traditions of the country.

Why you should spend Mother’s Day at a day spa

Now let us discuss the reasons why you should spend the holiday at a day spa with your mother. There are many benefits not just physically, but also mentally and emotionally. Read on to discover the benefits for you and your mother!

  1. Promotes a Bonding Experience - Reconnect with your mom in a fun and meaningful way by going to the spa together. This is a great way to strengthen your bond and create new experiences while being able to chat about everything you have missed in each other’s lives if you have not seen each other for some time. Your mother will be truly grateful and recognize that you care about her well-being and happiness. If you want something truly unique, consider going to a spa that offers more than just a mani-pedi treatment or a sauna, such as one that comes with a special experience.

  2. Rejuvenates Your Body and Reduces Stress: Everyday life can be fast-paced, demanding, and requires a lot out of us, so being stressed is a common result of these factors. Stress can have negative impacts on the skin such as creases and acne. Going to a spa will free and calm your mom’s mind as you both submerge into the relaxing and tranquil environment. There are many spa treatments that are designed to heal the mind and body such as facials, saunas, massages and body scrubs. Once you leave you will both feel refreshed mentally and physically, and ready to take on the day once again.

  3. Promotes Healthier and Younger Looking Skin: Did you know that a spa can have a direct influence on your skin’s health and appearance? Since spas can reduce stress and anxiety, this can protect against not only acne, but also premature aging. Your mother will also have glowing skin as increased circulation and stimulation to the blood flow can help deliver both oxygen and vital nutrients to the area.

  4. Improves Blood Flow and Circulation: Receiving a relaxing treatment such as a massage can allow the blood flow to deliver the necessary oxygen and nutrients due to the physical touch that this service provides. In turn, this will help improve your mom’s immune system because the vital organs such as the lungs, heart and muscles will be able to function properly.

  5. Gives Smoother Skin: Receiving surgery is not the only way to achieve smoother skin–there are plenty of options that a spa provides which can help your mom meet her desired goal if she would like smoother skin. This could be anywhere from receiving a relaxing facial that provides the nutrients that one’s skin craves, or feeling at peace which will in turn make your mom’s skin healthier. An exfoliation treatment removes dead skin cells and replaces them with newer ones, which is how your mother can also get softer, smoother and glowing skin.

  6. Achieve Better Sleep Results: Tossing and turning at night? Having a good sleep schedule is key to having healthy skin. Sleep encourages more blood flow to the area which makes your skin tone appear more even; by not getting enough hours in, you may appear pale or blotchy. You will also receive fewer breakouts because when we do not get enough sleep, we may become stressed, which can cause acne and pimples to appear. You may feel stressed from work and thus not get very good sleep, so going to a spa is likely to improve your mood and thus your sleep schedule during the evening.

  7. Boosts Confidence and Self-Esteem: At first glance this may seem surprising, but people who receive spa treatments are generally happy afterwards, which gives them feelings of positivity, self-love, improved mood, and confidence. This in turn will positively affect the way they approach communicating with others, how they see the world, going to important and intimidating meetings, and how they feel about themselves. Going to a spa benefits you and those around you, and it also helps your skin since feeling good within makes you feel good and glowy outwards.

  8. Releases Serotonin and Dopamine: Experiencing increased levels of these hormones makes you a happier person, and as a result less depressed and anxious. Being a happier person means you are likely less stressed, which would be great for your skin so you don’t develop acne or pimples.
