Continue reading to learn about the history of Mother’s Day, the best itinerary to give to your mom on the special holiday, and relaxing spa treatments that will make her day.

The history of Mother’s Day

Celebrating one’s mother can be traced back to the time of ancient Greeks and Romans in which they had festivals honoring the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele. However, the first modern interpretation of the holiday is related to the early Christian festival called “Mothering Sunday” and was prevalent in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe. This is when those who practiced would return to their “mother church”, or the main church in their town, for a special service during the fourth Sunday in Lent. Eventually, the Mothering Sunday tradition became a more secular holiday in which children would give their mothers presents such as flowers and other gifts to show their love and appreciation for them. This eventually became the Mother’s Day holiday we know today in America starting in the 1930s and 1940s.

In the United States, the origins of Mother’s Day have a long history of their own, which date back to the 19th century. Before the Civil War, Ann Reeves Jarvis started “Mother’s Day Work Clubs” in West Virginia which aimed to teach local women how to properly care for their children. Eventually after the Civil War in 1868, Jarvis organized “Mothers’ Friendship Day” where mothers gathered with former Union and Confederate soldiers to promote peace. Julia Ward Howe, who was an abolitionist and suffragette, was another “founder” of the holiday we know today. In 1870, she wrote the “Mother’s Day Proclamation” which was a call to action that asked mothers to unite in promoting world peace. In 1873, she also campaigned for a “Mother’s Peace Day” to be celebrated every June 2.

The official holiday of Mother’s Day arose in the 1900s mainly due to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, the daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis. To commemorate her mother’s passing in 1905, her daughter created a day to honor the sacrifices that mothers made for their children. After receiving much success from the holiday, Jarvis sought to make it added to the national calendar. She argued that American holidays were biased toward the success of men, so she wrote to newspapers and established politicians where she strongly urged them to adopt a special day honoring mothers. In 1912, many states, towns and churches recognized Mother’s Day as an official and annual holiday; she had also established the Mother’s Day International Association to help promote her cause. In 1914, thanks to all of Anna Jarvis’s efforts, Woodrow Wilson officially recognized and established the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated worldwide, but varies depending on the traditions of the country.

The perfect Mother’s Day itinerary

If you are not sure how to plan Mother’s Day but want to do something really special for your mother, then read on to discover unique activities that will show her how much you love and care about her.

Early morning: breakfast in bed

Time to start off the day just right by preparing a thoughtful bed and breakfast for your mother. Grab a sturdy tray and be ready to stack on scrambled eggs, waffles or pancakes with syrup, a bowl of fresh fruit, a tasty pastry like a croissant (bonus points if it is chocolate-filled) or chocolate chip muffin, and a tall glass of orange juice or apple juice. This will immediately show her how much she means to you and that you are willing to go above and beyond just to see her smile as soon as the sun comes out.

Later morning: go for a hike or stroll

After you have both had time to chat, watch a show, and eat your five-star breakfast, you may feel a bit lethargic, but now is a good time to get your energy back by going for a hike or a serene stroll. This will allow you both to enjoy nature, get in a workout, and do something relaxing and calming together. Consider sitting somewhere and looking at the flowers, take in the scenery, and watch the birds and squirrels pass by you.

Early Afternoon: go out for a nice brunch

After the relaxing walk, now is time to take your mother out for a beautiful brunch at her restaurant of choice. If it is nice out, consider ordering to go and have a gorgeous picnic in nature. Enjoy the time together and the beauty around you.

Mid-Late Afternoon - visit the spa

This next activity is surely going to make you and your mother feel refreshed and relaxed, which is a day at the spa. Not only is it a unique idea, but there are many mental and physical benefits as well that both you and her will feel. Upon entrance, you will be greeted with soothing ocean or raindrop sounds, aromatic scents, and the delicious taste of chocolates and sparkling champagne served by the greeter. By taking part in this luxury with your mother, you will be able to release oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin in the brain. This will lead you both to complete relaxation, tranquility, and happiness. You and your mother can enjoy several different massage experiences to strengthen your relationship. These include hot stone, Swedish, aromatherapy, and deep tissue, to name a few.

There are many therapeutic benefits of receiving a massage treatment. According to Better Health, they can reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow and circulation, reduce stress, relax and calm you, improve joint mobility and flexibility, give your skin a nice glow, recover soft tissue injuries, improve sleep, and improve your overall well-being and mental state. Moreover, this will improve your relationship with your mother because before you can feel happy from being around others, you first need to feel happy from within.

A massage is a great overall investment for you both and will certainly keep you both happy for a long time as you feel the lasting effects from the spa enter into your lives. A relaxing spa getaway will also create beautiful memories. After entering the scenic location together, the tranquil, relaxing and secluded atmosphere will encourage you and your mother to connect emotionally.

Evening: order in, watch a movie and bake together

After a relaxing spa day together, we suggest ordering food in (or cooking, depending on your preference) and binge-watching your favorite show or movie. Follow this up by baking your favorite dessert so that you can enjoy it for the next few days. This will allow you both to reflect on the day together with minimal distractions.
