Preparing for a wedding is an exciting time, but it can also be stressful. This is why practicing self-care during this period is especially important so you can feel relaxed and ready to prepare the wedding of your dreams. A great way to treat yourself, your fiancé, or your wedding crew is by taking them to a day spa for a special experience. Plenty of spas take part in pre-wedding pampering packages and services so there is sure to be something that you will enjoy. In this article, we will explore the history of wedding proposals and marriages, the benefits of going to a spa for your mental and physical health, and packages that are offered at ZZ Day Spa just for weddings, bachelorette parties, and solo self care experiences.

The history of wedding proposals

Getting on your knee and proposing to your partner has become a long-held tradition associated with popping the question. Yet, for all of those who take part in this ritual, many of them probably do not know where it comes from or why people do it. The tradition traces back to the time of medieval knights bowing before noblewomen as a sign of respect. Over time, the tradition of kneeling on one knee to propose marriage began. This tradition was reminiscent of knights from the Middle Ages who kneeled to swear allegiance and protection to the woman he wanted to love and marry.

Before this, according to ModernGents, Ancient Greece had other traditions, such as the practice of male suitors tossing apples to a woman whom they wanted to marry. This custom dates back to the Goddess of Chaos, Eris. According to legend, when Peleus and Thetis got married, Eris threw a golden apple at their wedding guests, with a note written on the apple saying it was intended for the most beautiful person in the room. In ancient Rome, marriage was a partnership between families. Its primary purpose was to produce heirs to inherit familial qualities, status and property.

Proposals were actually seen more as business arrangements between family representatives from ancient Egypt through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance; romance was not a big factor. However, by the 19th century (especially in America), more couples began to marry each other out of love and friendship instead of for their family name. This is because people began to recognize the value of individuality and personal happiness, although this mostly occurred in nations that were industrialized. Eventually, love and emotion became a big reason for a couple to marry.

During this period of wedding proposals and marriage, when a man wanted to marry a woman, he would first go to her father as a sign of respect and ask for her hand in marriage. The father could refuse if he thought the man was unsuitable for his daughter, or he could agree if he found the man to be worthy of his daughter and family. Today, some men still like to respect this tradition out of respect. Proposals were also far more casual. While there are still casual proposals done today, this was the common way to propose–someone may propose on the couch while watching TV. For the majority, this is far different from proposals today in which, with the rise of social media, wedding proposals have largely become an elaborate spectacle to show to others. Some people even joke that if you do not post about it online, then did it even happen?

How Visiting a Spa Benefits You

Now let’s discuss the benefits that a spa has on your skin. Going to a spa not only helps your skin physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. Here are some ways that going to a spa will improve your mental and physical health.

  • Rejuvenates Your Body and Reduces Stress: Everyday life can be fast-paced, demanding, and requires a lot out of us, so being stressed is a common result of this. Stress can have negative impacts on the skin such as creases and acne. Going to a spa will free and calm your mind as you submerge yourself into the relaxing and tranquil environment. There are many spa treatments that are designed to heal the mind and body such as facials, saunas, massages and body scrubs. Once you leave you will feel refreshed mentally and physically, and ready to take on the day once again.

  • Promotes Healthier and Younger Looking Skin: Did you know that a spa can have a direct influence on your skin’s health and appearance? Since spas can reduce stress and anxiety, this can protect against not only acne, but also premature aging. You will also have glowing skin as increased circulation and stimulation to the blood flow can help deliver oxygen and vital nutrients to the area.

  • Gives Smoother Skin: Receiving surgery is not the only way to achieve smoother skin–there are plenty of options that a spa provides which can help you meet your desired goal. This could be anywhere from receiving a relaxing facial that includes the nutrients your skin craves, or feeling at peace which will in turn make your skin healthier. An exfoliation treatment removes dead skin cells and replaces them with newer ones, which is how you can also get softer, smoother and glowing skin.

  • Achieve Better Sleep Results: Having a good sleep schedule is key to having healthy skin. Sleep encourages more blood flow to the area which makes your skin tone appear more even; by not getting enough hours in, you may appear pale or blotchy. You will also receive fewer breakouts because when we do not get enough sleep, we may become stressed, which causes acne and pimples to appear. You may feel stressed from work and thus toss and turn at night, so going to a spa is likely to improve your mood and thus your sleep schedule during the evening.

  • Boosts Confidence and Self-Esteem: At first glance this may seem surprising, but people who receive spa treatments are generally happy afterwards, which gives them feelings of positivity, self-love, improved mood, and confidence. This in turn will affect the way they approach communicating with others, how they see the world, going to important and intimidating meetings, and how they feel about themselves. Going to a spa benefits you and those around you, and it also helps your skin since feeling good within makes you feel good and glowy outwards.

  • Releases Serotonin and Dopamine: Experiencing increased levels of these hormones makes you a happier person, and as a result less depressed and anxious. Being a happier person means you are likely less stressed, which would be great for your skin so you don’t develop acne or pimples.
