How to Build Your Own Skincare Routine

Skincare is all the rage, and for a good reason. Having a daily skincare routine is important for maintaining skin health and keeping the skin glowing and youthful. Using skincare products to prevent skin problems is easier and less expensive than trying to fix the issues in the future.

If you’re ready to create your own skincare routine but are not sure where to start, we’ve got you covered. We’re going over the skincare basics to develop your own routine to keep your skin looking fresh.

What is My Skin Type?

Before diving into products, you’ll need to analyze your skin to figure out your skin type. Whether it be normal, sensitive, dry, oily, or combination, there is a multitude of skincare products suitable for every skin type.

Normal Skin

If you have a normal skin type, you typically don’t experience any dryness or oiliness on the skin. Your skin is not sensitive and you typically don’t suffer from acne or other imperfections. “It is not prone to breakouts, flakiness, feeling slick or tight. Pores are generally small, the skin's texture is smooth, and it is less likely to be prone to sensitivity or blemishes.” CeraVe

Sensitive Skin

“Sensitive skin is often referred to as a skin type, but you can have oily and sensitive skin, dry and sensitive skin or normal and sensitive skin. Regardless of which type of skin you have, if you have sensitive skin, it may be red, feel like it's burning, itching or dry. These symptoms may be related to having skin that is more vulnerable to external irritants and may be triggered by certain ingredients, like dyes or fragrance, as well as environmental factors. If your skin is sensitive, you may be able to determine what triggers your sensitivity and avoid products containing those specific ingredients or alter your environment to reduce your exposure to triggering agents.” CeraVe

Dry Skin

If you have dry skin, it should be fairly easy to detect. You may experience flakiness on the skin as well as a feeling of tightness. “Small pores and an overall feeling of tightness characterize dry skin. Your skin often has more visible lines, less elasticity, and a duller complexion.” SkinVision

Oily Skin

If your skin is oily you may experience constant shine and a greasy feeling throughout the day on your face. It may cause the pores on your face to appear larger. “‘Oily’ is used to describe a skin type with heightened sebum production. This over production is known as seborrhea.” Eucerin

Choosing Your Products

Choosing your products to develop a skincare routine can be overwhelming. With hundreds of products on the market, it can be tricky to find what is best for your skin. Finding a good cleanser and moisturizer that work for your skin type to use every morning and night is the perfect way to get started.

Cleanser

Washing your face is the most important step to a great skincare routine. If you’re purchasing products and just applying them to your skin without cleansing, you’re applying those products over a layer of dirt and bacteria that can get trapped in the pores.  Our skin is exposed to many different elements throughout the day. Removing this dirt and grime will maintain clear and healthy skin and provide a clean slate for the next steps of your skincare routine.  For more details, check out “The Power and Importance of Cleansing” from Biologique Recherche Paris.

Moisturizer

Moisturizing the skin daily protects the face and keeps it hydrated. As cleansing removes the dirt and bacteria that can end up on the skin, moisturizing protects the skin and lessens the amount of dirt and bacteria that reaches the skin. Keeping the skin moisturized is important to prevent breakouts and irritation, regulate skin texture, and maintain balance throughout the skin.

The Right Cleanser and Moisturizer For You

To find a cleanser and moisturizer for you, it is important to know what your skin type is and what your skin needs. Once you’ve determined your skin type, you’ll be able to select products that are targeted to match your skin’s needs.

Regular Facials

While daily skincare at home is extremely important, the best way to figure out what your skin needs is by regularly getting facial treatments. Monthly facials will give your skin a deeper cleanse than your regular skin care routine, and make your skin feel and look better. At ZZ Day Spa, our estheticians can evaluate your skin and figure out what it needs to look its best. They can recommend you products and treatments to target your personal skincare concerns. With regular visits, your esthetician can monitor and maintain the health of your skin to make sure that it is being treated properly.
