How to Maintain Lash Extensions

If you’re someone who has sparse lashes, getting extensions can help your eyes pop and give you a boost of confidence. But if you aren’t caring for your lashes properly, they won’t look as good or last nearly as long. Here are some expert tips on how to maintain your lash extensions!

1. Wash and Brush with Care

For the first 48 hours of having extensions, you’ll need to make sure they don’t come into contact with water. After that, you should clean them every three days or so. This includes washing the lashes with distilled water or a special cleanser formulated for lash extensions. When you’re in the shower, you should also allow the water to run over your eyes. Use a spoolie to brush out your lashes each morning.

2. Replace Your Pillowcase

As strange as it may sound, the kind of pillowcase you’re sleeping on could actually impact your lash extensions. An ordinary cotton pillowcase may cause your lashes to fall out at an accelerated pace. You want something softer and gentler, made from either silk or satin. As a bonus, these pillowcases are great for your hair and skin, too!

3. Edit Your Makeup Drawer

While you may find yourself wearing less eye makeup after you’ve gotten your lash extensions, it’s important that if you are reaching for makeup, you use the right products. You want your mascara to be water-based, not waterproof. The best mascara to use with your extensions will either be volumizing or something that lengthens with keratin. Avoiding waterproof makeup is key because removing waterproof eye makeup requires oil, which breaks down the glue that’s on your lashes. Also, avoid wearing powdery eyeshadow – it could cause powder to build up in your lashes.

4. Check Your Skincare

Even your skincare products may need to change once you get extensions. This is true of products that come close to your eyes such as eye makeup remover, cleanser, and eye cream. Check the ingredients list. If there’s oil in the product, you’ll have to skip it while you’re wearing your lash extensions!

5. Get Lash Refills as Recommended

If you want your lashes to stay long and luscious, you can’t afford to miss your refill appointments. For best results, you should book a refill every two weeks. If you wait longer, your natural lashes may actually shed more, leaving gaps in your lash line. This could leave you with even sparser lashes than you had before you got extensions!
