Waxing Vs. Shaving: Which One Is Better?

Is Waxing Better Than Shaving?

There are tons of hair removal options available nowadays, and waxing and shaving seem to be the most popular. Although shaving is fast and easy, waxing provides more benefits in the long run.

With shaving, there are more disadvantages than advantages. When you shave the skin, hair is cut from the surface of the skin. This causes faster regrowth, and the hair growing back appears thicker and darker because of the blunt-edged cut. Hair may regrow as quickly as one day. There is also a risk of rash and itchiness from shaving. If the razor is not used properly, it can damage the skin and cause what is known as razor burn or razor bumps. Another risk of shaving is cutting the skin, causing bleeding and injury.

What is Waxing?

Waxing is the process of applying hard or soft wax to the skin to effectively remove body hair directly from the root. Waxing allows your esthetician to remove large areas of hair at a time and leaves the skin incredibly soft and smooth.

Benefits of Waxing vs Shaving

  • Longer lasting results - The results of waxing can last from three to six weeks, depending on your personal hair growth cycle. Because the hair is removed from the root, hair growth after waxing occurs much more slowly. Although the hair does grow back, it will appear thinner and lighter because it is completely re-growing from the follicle. Over time, the weakening of the follicle can completely eliminate hair growth with regular treatments.

  • Exfoliation - Waxing not only removes the hair, but it also exfoliates the skin. When the wax is applied and pulled off, the top layer of dead skin cells is removed along with the hair. This leaves an extremely smooth finish that cannot be achieved with shaving.

  • No risk of Hyperpigmentation - Hyperpigmentation is a common issue caused by shaving frequently. It is a condition that develops on the skin that makes some areas appear darker than the rest. There is no risk of hyperpigmentation on the body when removing hair with wax.

  • Less ingrown hairs - Ingrown hairs occur when shaved hairs grow back into the skin. This causes inflammation in the skin and occurs due to dead skin clogging the hair follicle.  Since waxing removes hair from the roots and removes dead skin from the surface, the risk of ingrown hair that can lead to infection is greatly minimized.

  • No more rashes, cuts, or dry skin - Using a razor to shave hair can cause your skin to dry. By waxing, you won’t need to worry about razor burn, bumps, or damaging your skin anymore.
